Our latest Kenya offering comes to us from various smallholder farmers delivering their coffee to the Kiunyu wet mill or ‘factory’, located near the town of Kerugoya in Kenya’s Kirinyaga district. The mill was established in the 1960s in the southern foothills of Mt Kenya and serves several communities in the surrounding area.
The region’s mineral rich volcanic soils, 5,000 ft. plus elevation and dominant SL34 variety combined with selective harvesting and meticulous preparation yield coffees that aggressively display the classic Kenya cup profile: clean, tartly citric and floral. After harvest and depulping beans are fermented for between 12 to 16 hours. The coffee is then washed in fresh water from the nearby river to remove all traces of mucilage before drying on raised beds. Recently the factory has initiated several eco-friendly measures, and farmers are encouraged to farm using environmentally sustainable methods and are given regular guidance in these.
Vivid in the cup, our perfectly balanced Kenya Kiunyu features big fruity acidity, marked by deep ruby grapefruit notes and a long finish of unsweetened chocolate.
