Kenya Gatuya AA
Tart cherry, coffee blossom, malted chocolate finish
Tasting notes: Tart Cherry, Coffee Blossom, Malted Chocolate Finish
Region: Muranga District
One of our great pleasures in sourcing quality green coffees is the arrival of samples from the Dorman Kenya auction. Typically we receive 15 to 20 samples of the highest scoring Kenyas the main crop has to offer, and after extensive evaluation we select and bid on those we will offer for the year. While this year’s crop was notably tame overall, there were some sparkling exceptions, and our Kenya Gatuya stands tall among them.
Our latest Kenya offering comes to us from the Gatuya Coffee Factory washing station operated by the New Murarandia Farmers’ Cooperative Society, which has a total of around 3,500 smallholder producer members. Each member owns about a quarter hectare and delivers coffee cherry to the factory. The region’s mineral rich volcanic soils, 5,000 ft. plus elevation and dominant SL-34 variety combined with selective harvesting and meticulous preparation yield coffees that aggressively display the classic Kenya cup profile: clean, tartly citric and floral. After harvest and depulping beans are fermented for between 12 to 16 hours. The coffee is then washed in fresh water from the nearby Muriuriu River to remove all traces of mucilage before drying on raised beds. Recently the factory has initiated several eco-friendly measures, and farmers are encouraged to farm using environmentally sustainable methods and given regular guidance how to employ them.
Vivid in the cup, our perfectly balanced Kenya Gatuya features big fruity acidity, marked by deep notes of dark cherry and a long finish of malted chocolate overlaid with a delightful coffee blossom aroma.
