We’ve been proud to feature dry process Ethiopian coffees as a consistent part of our coffee offerings. Continuing improvements in the drying and sorting of these coffees have brought us intensely aromatic and fruity cups with little to no off flavors of ferment or of immature cherries.
Our latest edition of these fine Ethiopians comes to us from the Sidama region in south central Ethiopia. Its classification as a Number 1 Grade, unusual for natural process coffees, promises a consistent and clean cup, and is a testament to the meticulous sorting and processing the Testi Atla washing station is known for.
Collected at the washing station from many small farms in the surrounding area Shanta Wene is a local variety of the coffee plant known as Kurume, characterized by its high annual yield and small cherries.
Superbly balanced, at first sip Shanta Wene features a mix of fruity aromas. As the flavor develops a huge note of ripe nectarine juice dominates (remember that one perfect summer nectarine?). The silky, full body leads into a lush finish ending in smooth milk chocolate and toffee notes. Like many of the Ethiopias we’ve offered this is a big cup with a lot of complex character. Finally it should be noted that it makes a great SO espresso for those so inclined.
