Few of us have had the opportunity to enjoy coffee from Ecuador. Known for its intensity and sweetness, the finer Ecuadorian coffees have battled a fluctuating economy, as well as an industry historically focused on instant coffee, for recognition and access to the specialty market. As select farmers have begun to establish a path to profitability by investing in producing specialty and super premium quality coffees we can hope to see more excellent Ecuadors available in the coming years.
El Guayacán is an eight hectare farm in Nuevos Horizontes, a small, remote community in southeast Ecuador close to the border with Peru. The farm was founded in the early 1990s by brothers Camilo, Vicente and Ivan Gaona. The brothers and their families continue a hands–on approach to working the farm and processing the coffee they harvest. The care they exercise in forging each link of the chain connecting their farm to your cup, coupled with near perfect climatic and soil conditions of the farm’s microclimate have resulted in some of the finest coffee Ecuador has to offer.
In the cup Finca El Guayacán opens with an intense but sweet Mandarin Orange tanginess over a frothy mouthfeel, evolving into a more lemon character citric note. The complex finish is marked by an unexpected note of ginger root, extending into a lingering aftertaste of vanilla toned caramel.
