Our White Label program was designed to feature super premium coffees of limited availability--rare cups we would not want you to miss. These coffees tend to fall in to one of two categories, being exceptional either for their unusual characteristics (like last month’s offering from Bali) or for their excellence in presenting a classic set of flavors. This month’s White Label coffee is a return to the classic washed coffee profile.

Costa Rica Tarrazu Cafetales de Dota comes to us from the Dota subregion of the Tarrazu valley in central Costa Rica. It is one of the more remote areas of a country boasting several famous growing regions and blessed with a unique soil composition built up by surrounding volcanoes over thousands of years. The coffee cherries here are typically harvested when very ripe and are sold to the Dota micro mill by smallholder farmers in the surrounding hillside communities. Farm altitudes range from 4,000 to as high as 6,200 feet above sea level.

Coffee was first introduced to Costa Rica from Cuba in the early 1800s. By 1820 it was already being exported as the country’s main crop. Succeeding generations of coffee farmers developed a dedication to quality processing, unusual at the time, that established Costa Ricas as one of the few coffees defining what a classic washed coffee should be. Although coffee is no longer the country’s main industry, and now represents only around 1% of the world’s production, the influence of Costa Rica on the specialty coffee palate goes far beyond its numbers.

In the cup, our Tarrazu Dota displays a silky refinement underscored by bright grapefruit citrus. Its light acidity is tempered with a soft, rounded mouthfeel and bigger body. Dota coats the mouth with a sweet buttery richness that becomes more prominent as the cup cools. Flavors of dandelion petal, honey, and buttercream icing give way to pistachio and cocoa in the finish.

A phrase that you will encounter everywhere in Costa Rica is pura vida. Its English translation means “pure life” or “simple life.” It is, however, more than just a saying--it is a philosophy of life.  Pura vida means gratitude for the joys of life and not stressing over that which we cannot control. Locals use this term to say hello, goodbye, or even to let people know everything is okay. We like to think of our Costa Rica Tarrazu Cafetales de Dota as pura vida in a cup, and we hope you will take a moment to enjoy some of the joy that it brings.
