  • Colombia Nariño

The Nariño region of Southern Colombia has been blessed with a unique micro climate particularly suited to growing coffee plants. Situated close to the warm air currents of the Pacific Ocean and crossed by the Andean Mountains, coffee can be grown here at altitudes that would be prohibitively cold in other regions. Generous annual rainfall and mineral rich volcanic soil combine with long daylight hours to allow the coffee cherries to mature slowly, encouraging a sweeter, denser coffee.

The story: September of 2015 marked a special event in the history of coffee production in this unusual zone with the debut of the first Best of Nariño competition. Since then this competition has annually brought to the cupping table around 30 microlots of Nariño’s best. Fonte’s Colombia Nariño was a top scorer in this year’s competition, and comes to us from the farm of Leonardo Loaiza, perched at nearly 7,000 feet above sea level. Mr. Loaiza uses his own micro mill to process the harvested cherries which allows a meticulous level of quality control in sorting and fermentation.

As you brew our Colombia Nariño look for initial aromas of coffee flower and muscovado sugar. In the cup green fruit flavors are dominant, with notes of pear, green apple and honeydew rind. The pleasantly silky mouthfeel finishes with subtle flavors of spicy toffee.
