Kenya Kangunu AB
Kangunu displays the elements of a classic Kenya profile seamlessly integrated in the cup. Notes of citric acid, clean and grapefruit tinged, dominate at first. Aromas of black currant and blackberry then develop an exciting level of complexity. Finally the silky body of this coffee leads into a finish laden with citric notes dissolving into flavors of raisin and caramelized sugar.
The story: This coffee was produced by numerous smallholder farmers, each one a member of the Kagaari South Farmer’s Cooperative Society that delivers to the Kangunu Coffee Factory in Kenya’s Embu district. The region, located on the slopes of Mount Kenya, is well known for producing some of the best coffees coming out of Kenya and this lot is no exception.
The average smallholder farm size is less than a hectare with half an acre planted in coffee for an average of 250 trees per farmer. Kangunu Mill members receive assistance and support from Coffee Management Services, an organization dedicated to helping support a sustained industry in Kenya by offering services ranging from farm management consultation to international marketing.
The Cooperative’s farmers selectively handpick the ripest, reddest cherries, which are then either delivered directly to the cooperative’s wet mill or received at one of 4 collection points and then ferried over on the same day. Cherries are stringently hand sorted prior to pulping, with damaged and under ripe cherries being separated out from the ripe lots.
